What dark web exposure means

3 min read

"Your email was found on the dark web" sounds alarming. Here is what it usually means, and what to do.

Example: an exposure listing (not real)

What it means

Your practice was usually not hacked. Another website was, and a staff member had used their work email there. If they also reused their work password, that password may now be in an attacker's hands.

The two things to do

  1. Change the password on any work account that shares it, and stop reusing passwords.
  2. Turn on multi-factor authentication. A stolen password alone is then not enough. MFA in two minutes →
